Once known in the local dialect as San Micheléto, the area takes its name from the Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, still visible at the top of the hill.

Over the centuries, Villa San Michele has lived many lives: from medieval agricultural court to Austrian army barracks during the 19th-century Lombard-Venetian Kingdom — as evidenced by the imperial crest that still watches over the main entrance.
